The Lightning Conductor 2010 web part is ready for release and will be available for you to download and trial or purchase early next week.
The Lightning Conductor web part provides you with cross site collection aggregation and the ability to easily configure the presentation of the web part without writing complicated XML.
The Content Query Web Part that ships with SharePoint Server 2010 (CQWP) does not offer cross site collection rollup. You can add multiple columns using the CQWP 2010, but only according to the Out-of-the-Box style sheets. The Lightning Conductor Web Part 2010 also works with SharePoint Foundations as well as SharePoint Server 2010.
The Lightning Conductor Web Part is easily configured using the new SharePoint 2010 style dialog boxes. You can select the configuration dialog box by choosing configure web part from the web parts context menu.
The configuration of the LCWP 2010 is broken up into three easy stages. The first stage is to choose the rollup engine, Display Provider and then the refresh interval.
The second stage allows you to select the content source that you will be aggregating from which includes options such as ‘All Site Collections, Selected Site Collections, Selected Sites, or Selected Lists. Once you have selected the content source, you can select the list type and content type.
The final stage is to configure the presentation. You can select which columns you want to display, create column aliases, set the column order, and format the column values such as ‘Due Date’ in Short or Long Date format.
Once you choose Finish, the web part is configured as shown below:
You can configure any column to be the link column to the item, as well as apply filters using the filter options on the column header.
